Govt. Mankunwar Bai Arts & Commerece (Autonomous) College for women, Jabalpur was at first established in the year 1954. The college was known as Mohanlal Hargobind Das College of Home Science then. The college has a glorious history of achievements and accomplishments to its credit.The idea of establishing an educational institute for women was conceived by Mr. Parmanand Bhai Patel, a renowned industrialist of Jabalpur. The proposal was welcomed by Pandit Ravi Shankar Shukla, the then honourable Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. Initially the college came into existence with classes only of Home Science. Mr. Parmanand Bhai Patel’s business firm Mohanlal Hargovinddas donated rs. one lakh for the establishment of the college. As a result, on April 27, 1956 the college’s foundation was laid on 11 acres of  land in the heart of Jabalpur city by the Chief Minister of MP. Due to the successful functioning of the Home Science programme, the government of Madhya Pradesh granted permission to introduce Science and Commerce programmes as well. Consequently, the college was bifurcated into two independent colleges. The land for Govt. Mankunwar Bai Arts & Commerce College for women was donated by the lady Mankunwar Bai whose noble act became instrumental in introducing this college as a  prestigious Arts and Commerce college for women’s’ education.

Mankunwar Bai College has progressed to become one of the leading women colleges in the country ever since its existence. It is a Government Autonomous college belonging to Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh state. The College is located in the centre of Jabalpur city on a campus of 3.13 acres of land. Affiliated to Rani Durgavati  University  of Jabalpur, it is recognized by the UGC under 2 (f) and 12 (B) of the UGC Act of 1956. It was conferred autonomous status by the UGC in the year 1990. The College was accredited by the NAAC  with A+ grade in the first cycle of accreditation and with grade A in the second cycle. In the year 2020 and 2021 the college is ranked as 6th Best Autonomous College of the country and 3rd in the Madhya Pradesh state by the survey of Education World.
